Wouldn’t it be lovely to have soft, dewy skin.  Well, you can. Read on for some quick and simple tips.

First lets look at what a dry skin is. There are two things which you might consider dryness, but technically there is only one. We will discuss both!

WATER DRYNESS (This is dehydration).

What you need to know is:

  • Water has left the top layer of the epidermis (the part you can touch)
  • It is caused by high winds, heaters and and not drinking enough water
  • Using a stripping cleanser will remove the acid mantle (your skins protective layer) and you will experience water loss from the top skin cells – if your skin feels tight after cleansing you are stripping your skin!

What you can do is:

  • Use a zinc based moisturizer for adding protection
  • Drink more water (including herbal teas)
  • Use a quality ph balanced cleanser (such as medik8 Cream Cleanse)

OIL DRYNESS (This is a true oily skin)

What you need to know is:

  • This is caused by a lack of oil being produced in the sebaceous glands (the little oil sacks attached to your hair follicles)
  • Diet can play a part, if you are not eating enough good fats, your skin misses out
  • Stripping the skin of oil with harsh cleansers takes all the oil from the surface of the skin
  • Your skin will look flakey
  • Your skin will feel ‘papery’
  • Your skin may even flake off
  • Your skin will probably be quite patchy and your make up might reflect that too

What you can do is:

  • Switch to a good quality cleanser (Medik8s new oil cleanser would be perfect)
  • Use a heavier night cream, but is must be good quality. You get what you pay for and cheaper products must use cheaper oils (which have larger molecules and therefore do not penetrate the skin)
  • Exfoliate off the dry skin cells from the surface so that your skin looks better and your moisturizer will do a better job
